              Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Developed in 1983 as a Partnership between the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles School District, the D.A.R.E. Program is taught to prevent drug abuse in children and youth.

Heading Barnesville's D.A.R.E. Program is Sgt. Maggie Moreland.  Sgt. Moreland  teaches the D.A.R.E. Program to hundreds of 5th grade students. Normally drug abuse programs dwell on the harmful effects of drugs, but through the D.A.R.E. program Sgt. Moreland teaches students to recognize and resist many pressures that influence them to experiment with drugs, gangs and violence. In addition, Sgt. Moreland also focuses on their feelings relating to self-esteem, communications, decision making and positive alternatives to drug abuse behavior.

D.A.R.E. has been highly praised in the Barnesville Community for its positive influence on the children of Lamar County. Sgt. Moreland beleives the D.A.R.E. Program should be taught in every community through out the world.
